There’s a specific kind of magic that happens when professional curiosity meets personal passion. Recently, I’ve been diving deep into the world of Linux through a series of intensive courses on LinkedIn Learning. What started as a move to sharpen my professional toolkit has turned into a complete lifestyle shift—not just for my workstation, but for my entire household.

The Professional Deep Dive

To end 2025, I completed a targeted curriculum focused on the “Three Pillars” of system administration: Command Line Mastery, Performance, and Hardening.

Why Linux is Now a Family Affair

While these courses have been great for my career, the real fun started when I brought this knowledge home. I’ve officially transitioned my own laptop to Linux, and I’ve started moving my kids over to their own Linux builds as well.

Why I’m teaching my kids Linux:

  1. Ownership & Privacy: In an era of data tracking, I want my children to understand that they can own their operating system, rather than the operating system owning their data.
  2. The “Lego” Effect: Linux encourages you to take things apart and see how they work. It turns a laptop from a “black box” into a learning laboratory.
  3. Performance: Using the skills from my Performance Tuning course, I’ve been able to breathe new life into older hardware, making “slow” laptops feel brand new for the kids’ schoolwork and projects.
  4. Security: By applying Hardening Essential Training, I can sleep better knowing our home network is significantly more resilient.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s at the office or at the kitchen table, Linux offers a level of transparency and control that you just can’t find elsewhere. If you’ve been on the fence about making the switch, I highly recommend starting with the command line—it’s the gateway to a whole new world of computing.
