Let’s be real for a second—as men, we aren’t always great at admitting when we’re underwater. We’re taught to be the providers, the protectors, and the ones with the plan. But what happens when the weight of the world, the demands of the job, and the needs of our families start to feel like too much?
I just finished a 5-day devotional plan on the Bible App called “I’m Just a Guy: Who’s Overwhelmed,” and it was exactly the “gut check” I needed.
Breaking the “Tough Guy” Myth
The most refreshing part of this study was the honesty. It starts with the premise that it is okay to admit you’re overwhelmed. In fact, many of the greatest men in the Bible—men like David, Elijah, and even Moses—reached points where they felt they couldn’t go on.
The plan reminded me that being a “man of God” doesn’t mean being a man of iron; it means being a man who knows where to take his weakness.
Shifting the Burden
One of the key takeaways from these five days was learning the difference between carrying a burden and stewarding a responsibility. We often feel overwhelmed because we are trying to carry the results, the future, and the “what-ifs,” which were never meant for our shoulders.
The devotional walks through practical ways to take those anxieties to God, trading our frantic “doing” for a grounded “being” in His presence. It’s about realizing that God’s strength isn’t just a backup plan for when we fail; it’s supposed to be our primary source of power.
Finding a New Rhythm
By the end of the five days, the goal isn’t necessarily that the “to-do” list got shorter, but that my perspective got clearer. When we admit we are “just a guy” and that we need a Savior, the pressure to be a superhero starts to fade. We can lead better, love better, and work better when we aren’t suffocating under the weight of self-reliance.
If you’ve been feeling the “squeeze” lately—whether it’s from finances, family, or the general chaos of life—take five days to go through this plan. It’s a short investment that offers a massive return in peace of mind.
